Gold has been a symbol of luxury, status, and cultural identity for thousands of years. Yet throughout the modern world, one noticeable trend stands out: women tend to wear gold jewellery far more often than men. While men certainly do wear jewellery—rings, watches, chains, and bracelets—gold pieces remain noticeably less common. But why?
Historically, men did wear gold extensively. Ancient rulers, warriors, and leaders often wore gold as a sign of wealth and power. Over time, however, cultural norms shifted. In many societies, especially during the last few centuries, masculinity became associated with minimalism, practicality, and simplicity. Excess ornamentation was viewed as feminine, leading many men to avoid gold jewellery beyond essential items such as wedding bands.
Another reason is perception and style. Many men prefer accessories that feel subtle and understated, while gold—especially yellow gold—is naturally noticeable. Some men worry that gold may appear too shiny, too bold, or too “dressy,” making it harder to incorporate into everyday outfits. White gold or platinum is sometimes favored because it looks more neutral and blends easily with modern men’s fashion.
Cultural expectations also play a major role. In many parts of the world, gifting gold to women—especially at weddings, engagements, and special occasions—is a tradition. Women are encouraged to collect gold as a symbol of beauty, prosperity, and security. Men, on the other hand, are rarely given gold jewellery and typically receive watches or leather accessories instead. This creates a cycle where women grow up viewing gold as part of their identity, while men see it as optional.
Practicality is another factor. Men often lead more physically demanding lifestyles or prefer not to wear items that can get in the way. Rings, bracelets, or chains may feel restrictive during sports, gym sessions, or manual work. Because gold is a soft metal, it can scratch or bend more easily, which makes some men hesitant to wear it daily.
Modern trends, however, are starting to shift. With the rise of fashion influencers, hip-hop culture, and global style icons, more men are embracing gold chains, bracelets, and rings as statements of personality and confidence. Middle Eastern cultures and South Asian traditions continue to celebrate men wearing gold, proving that the preference is not universal but culturally shaped.
Ultimately, men wear less gold jewellery not because gold lacks appeal, but because society has shaped different expectations for men and women. As fashion evolves and more men explore personal expression through jewellery, gold may very well reclaim its place as a bold and timeless accessory for everyone.
